Canonical part identity across suppliers and assemblies
A stable engineering identity can connect the same component across vendors without allowing price, naming noise or search similarity to redefine the part.

The designation M3 screw is not a purchasing identity. It omits the standard, head form, length,
material and other distinctions that may decide whether a joint can be assembled. Supplier titles
add more variation: abbreviations, pack sizes, house brands and marketing text.
WorldIR establishes canonical identity from engineering evidence before looking for a seller. For a
standard part, dimensions and recovered features can be matched to a governed catalogue entry such
as iso4762:M3x8. Supplier SKUs then point to that identity as claims with provenance.
Stable identity, volatile offers
Price, stock and lead time change. They belong in timestamped offer observations with an expiry, not inside the component identity. A stale offer can remain in an audit trail while disappearing from a current comparison. A cheaper listing cannot make an incompatible part become equivalent.
Identity compounds
When two assemblies resolve a shape to the same catalogue target, the identity bridges those projects without requiring a geometry-similarity guess. Evidence remains scoped to each assembly so one disputed observation can be retracted without deleting the other.
This is also why catalogue coverage can be more valuable than indiscriminate model volume. One authoritative dimension table can identify a component family wherever it appears. A million more unlabelled meshes may add storage while leaving the same engineering question unanswered.
